To the families of the 2,346 Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to the more than 20,000 veterans who carry the scars of fighting our nations' common enemies, we honor you by building on the progress you helped us make; by working to build a truly democratic country whose citizens are safe, equal, and can look forward to a brighter future.

Afghans, too, have paid a high price to build that future. We mourn the more than 20,000 courageous soldiers and police who have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting us, and will never forget what they, and our brave wounded veterans, have given for Afghanistan.
Since 2001, veterans in America and Afghanistan have shared many experiences. It is a mark of the strength of the U.S.-Afghan partnership and of our countries' enduring friendship that our militaries continue to serve side-by-side today, in the fight to bring stability to our country, our region, and to rid the world of the terrorist threat.
