"Hacksaw Ridge," the dramatized tale of the first conscientious objector to earn the Medal of Honor, received six Academy Award nominations Tuesday morning, including one for the year's best picture.
Mel Gibson will be up for his second best-director Oscar, having won in 1995 for "Braveheart," which also took best picture. Andrew Garfield, who plays Pfc. Desmond Doss in the biopic, will be up for best actor, his first Academy Award nomination.
Doss earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on Okinawa in 1945. His citation outlines multiple instances where Doss put his life at grave risk to save fellow soldiers — he didn't pick up a weapon until the ordeal neared its conclusion, per the citation, when "he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station."
The film also picked up nominations in editing, sound editing and sound mixing categories. "La La Land" received 14 nominations, tying the Academy Awards record, and will be competing in each of the categories where "Hacksaw Ridge" earned recognition.
The awards will be announced Feb. 26, five days after the DVD release of "Hacksaw Ridge."
