A guide to Army-Navy, in 50 easy bullet points
December 10th, 2010 | Army Army-Navy game Football Navy | Posted by Phil Creed
- This game, with0ut question, is one of sports’ greatest rivalries. But …
- Navy has won the last eight Army-Navy games.
- Army has never been closer than 12 points those games.
- In the past three years, Army has failed to even score a touchdown. So some of the luster of rivalry is lost, whether folks admit it or not.
- However, there is hope.
- This is Army’s best season since 1996.
- The Black Knights have won six games and will play in the Armed Forces Bowl.
- Prior to this season, Army hasn’t been to a bowl game since 1996.
- Unfortunately for the Cadets, Navy is having another banner season. Read the rest of this entry »
Army gives Ellerson 2-year extension
December 7th, 2010 | Army Football | Posted by Phil Creed
West Point has agreed to a two-year contract extension for football coach Rich Ellerson, who’s resurrected the program after a decade of misery. Terms of the extension, which keeps Ellerson under contract until 2015, have not been made public.
This season Ellerson, in his season year with the team, has led the Cadets to their most successful season since 1996. They’ve won six games and qualified for a bowl — two things that past coaches Todd Berry, Bobby Ross and Stan Brock never came close to accomplishing.
At 6-5, Army still has a shot at finishing with a winning season. But they’ll have to beat Navy this Saturday or beat SMU in the Armed Forces Bowl to guarantee that happens. And if Ellerson can win either of those games, he’ll be the first Army coach to win 12 games in his first two seasons since Tom Cahill did it back in 1966 and 1967.

Pictures from Army’s loss to Hawaii
September 11th, 2010 | Army Football | Posted by Phil Creed
Army coach Rich Ellerson faced his alma mater Saturday at West Point when Hawaii, the school where Ellerson also got his coaching start, made the absurdly long trip for a 1 p.m. game at West Point. Ellerson saw his squad score four straight touchdowns to storm back from a 21-0 second quarter deficit, but unfortunately for Ellerson and the Black Knights, the Warriors tied the game up and then kicked the winning field goal with seven seconds left to play to win 31-28.
The last 30 seconds of this heartbreaker featured a fumble by backup quarterback Max Jenkins, a (questionable) late hit penalty on linebacker Steven Erzinger and a long pass down the sidelines to set up Hawaii’s game-winning 31-yard field goal.
Making things worse for Army: Sophomore quarterback Trent Steelman, who started every game for the Cadets last season, left the game in the second half with a shoulder injury.
The home loss leaves Army 1-1. On the bright side, Army’s offense has scored more points in each of its first two games than it did any game last year. But I’m sure nobody cares about the bright side after a loss like this.
Falcons Coach Troy Calhoun: Tweet this!
August 31st, 2010 | After Action Air Force Army Football Navy | Posted by Mike Hoffman
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Don’t expect Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun to be confined to 140 characters.
He told the Colorado Springs Gazette that, unlike other Mountain West coaches, he will not start his own Twitter account, but he will not ban his players from starting their own. The Air Force football team has its own Twitter account, although @AFFalcons is leaving its 17 followers wanting more with only 19 tweets in the past year.
Army football coach Rich Ellerson has his own Twitter account, but someone might want to tell him. @RichEllerson has 12 followers, even though he has yet to tweet once. We’re waiting, Rich.
Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo is sitting on the sidelines along with Calhoun. @TripleOptionSailorBoy is still an available handle. Just saying…
Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs doesn’t have a handle, which is absurd considering @MagicMan4 is open. However, @DobbsForHeisman is “the resource for the Completely Unofficial Ricky Dobbs Heisman Campaign,” with 168 followers.
Anyone have any suggestions for Calhoun’s handle if he ever caves? Leave suggestions in the comment section below.
Paper: Army QB had honor code violation, expected to play in opener
August 20th, 2010 | Army Football | Posted by Phil Creed
Army quarterback Trent Steelman had an unspecified honor code violation recently, but is expected to start the season with the rest of the Black Knights on Sept. 4 at Eastern Michigan, according to a report by the Times Herald-Record.
A cadet honor board recommended discretion for the violation, rather than separation, the paper said.
“To be honest, it’s helped me on the field, just dealing with adversity because being put in that situation, it brings every type of challenge there is in life,” Steelman, a sophomore, told the paper. “For me to go through that, it did. It helped me grow as a person, a football player and a leader. We have to understand that it’s something bigger than football. That’s what it’s going to prepare us for being a leader when it counts the most.”
Steelman started every game at quarterback for West Point last season. Army coach Rich Ellerson told the paper that no team-enforced suspension is expected.

Army announces its 2010 football plebe class
June 30th, 2010 | Army Football | Posted by Mike Hoffman
Army Coach Rich Ellerson ushered in 55 new recruits to his reconstruction project at West Point. Of the 55 plebes, 27 are straight out of high school while the other 28 spent last year at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School.
You won’t find the same five-star stand outs on a Florida or Alabama roster, but Ellerson is hoping to find those less heralded players in high school, which Army and Air Force have unearthed to build up their football programs.
One standout which Army fans can get excited about is 6-2, 270-pound center Shelby Jackson, who Ellerson foresees as a center of the future. Currently Army’s top two centers are seniors. Center is a vital position in the run- heavy option offense Ellerson is establishing at West Point — it’s essentially the quarterback of the offensive line.
Ellerson also expects 6-1, 200-pound running back Raymond Maples to contribute this year.
“He’s a slightly smaller Jared Hassin (Army’s starting fullback). He can play B-back (fullback) or A or C-back (slotback). He’s a guy that has some magic at that position,” Ellerson told the Times Herald-Record.
Unlike Florida and Alabama recruits, Army’s plebes must complete Beast Barracks, which is cadet basic training, before they can even considering strapping on a helmet. First summer practice starts on Aug. 2.
