The Naval Academy has started three different quarterbacks so far this season due to injuries. Senior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada came in as the starter after a stellar junior year where he threw for 952 yards and ran for another 834, but a lingering hamstring injury has forced him to miss five games this season.

Senior captain Jarod Bryant has filled in admirably running for 440 yards and throwing for 265 starting five games this season. It looks like he will be the starter again against Notre Dame as he has taken snaps with the first team during practice this week with Kaheaku-Enhada out. He last started against Southern Methodist University until he sprained his shoulder in the first quarter and had to leave the game.

That brings us to sophomore sensation Ricky Dobbs. The speedster took over for Bryant against SMU and led the Mids to the 34-7 win running for 224 yards and four touchdowns. The next week he ran for one touchdown and passed for another in the overtime comeback win against Temple when Navy faced a 20-point fourth quarter deficit.

Coach Ken Niumatalolo is still hesitant to start Dobbs and seems worried about what he’s seeing from the sophomore in practice.

“I’ve got to stop watching Ricky in practice because he does some things in practice that make you scratch your head,” Niumatalolo said.

Kaheaku-Enhada led the Middies to their first win over Notre Dame last year in over four decades. It’ll fall to Bryant and Dobbs for Navy to start it’s own streak of wins against the struggling Fighting Irish.
