Foam party at Eglin

A reddit user uploaded this photo of a hangar at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., that had a rather unfortunate mishap. Reportedly, a spark set off the hangar’s fire suppression system, covering the A-10, F-15 and F-16 in foam.  You can only imagine the fun the maintenance crew had cleaning up the mess.

Navy getting its name on Andrews landmark

David Brown, the managing editor over at Defense News, snapped this picture of the landmark water tower outside Joint Base Andrews, Md. The water tower has been an icon over the beltway with the Air Force logo standing on its own, until now as a result of joint basing.

What’s in the stocking?

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz presents a holiday stocking to Senior Airman Jeremy Roberts, 8th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Dec. 24, 2011 at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea. // Master Sgt. Sonny Cohrs

So the question has to be asked: What is in a holiday stocking from the chief of staff? I assume it’s full of challenge coins and PowerPoint presentations about Air Force core values on Pentagon-use approved flash drives, but I could be wrong. Any ideas? Leave your guesses, intelligent or otherwise, in the comment section.

Also, ever wonder what the chief looks like dressed down? Now you don’t have to wonder. Click here to get the big reveal.

F-15 crash site photos

There is nothing cool about losing a $30 million aircraft. But a couple good things did come from the F-15 crash near Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in October: the pilot ejected without injury and Airman 1st Class Daniel Hughes managed to snap some nifty photos of the cleanup process.

Serving Abroad Through Your Eyes

Senior Airman Lauren Everett, a medic attached to Laghman Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), talks to an Afghan child during a patrol in Mehtar Lam district, Laghman province, Afghanistan, Oct. 14 // Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane

If you’ve served abroad, Uncle Sam wants your photographs.

The Defense Department wants donated photos  from current and former service members who have served overseas for use in a recognition exhibition planned in conjunction with the State Department, according to a DoD press release. The department is looking for photos that depict life as a military member overseas in six specific categories: daily life, friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph.

If your picture is chosen, it will be used for display in a special photography exhibition planned for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Pentagon and other prominent venues, stateside and overseas. Project  “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” is accepting photo submissions through Presidents Day, which is Feb. 20, 2012.

“It is simply phenomenal, and absolutely fitting that photos by America’s bravest during tough duty abroad get this sort of national recognition,” said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in the press release. “I can’t wait to see them and take part in the new conversations and relationships this is sure to inspire.”

Rules, entry form and submission guidelines can be found at http://www.ourmilitary.mil/their-eyes/serving-abroad-through-their-eyes.  The Defense Media Activity will provide technical services to receive submissions and assist in screening for any operational security or privacy concerns. To help ensure suitability, entrants should consult with their public affairs officer before photographic submission is made.

The defense and state department are working together with the office of ART in Embassies on this project in celebration of 50 years of international cultural exchange, according to the press release. The ART in Embassies program was originally established by the Museum of Modern Art in 1953 – and formalized by the Kennedy administration in 1962.  It is one of the premier public-private partnership arts organizations in continuous operation, with a presence in some 200 venues within 180 countries worldwide, according to the press release.

Personnel fitness

The Air Force Personnel Center in San Antonio had a good turnout for that city’s Marathon on Sunday.

All told, 99 members of the AFPC family — civilians, airmen and their family members — made it out.

Nineteen ran the big one: the full 26.2 miles. Another 80 ran the half marathon.

Squared away airman

Tactical Air Control Party Staff Sgt. Nathan Angel with the 147th Air Support Operations Squadron, Houston, Texas, gets a quick shave in before heading out on patrol performing land navigation to his teams targets on Aug 16, 2011, at Townsend Range during a three-day field exercise in Brunswick, Ga.

A lot of people may not understand that special operators such as SEALs, Delta Force and controllers don’t grow their hair out and wear long shaggy beards because it’s cool or because they don’t care about being military. It’s because in the broad scheme of their mission, personal grooming sometimes has to take a back seat. And there is an element of blending with the local populace who they are often training or working with.

This TAC-P is taking the time, though, and I think that’s worth noting.

The photographer, by the way, is one of the highest regarded photographers in the military today. Master Sgt. Jeremy Lock is the perennial favorite to win the Military Photographer of the Year award handed out annually at Fort Mead at the Defense Information school.

Lock won this year on the back of a strong effort called Keri’s War, which you can see here. The photo series documents an airman’s torturous struggle with breast cancer and chemotherapy.
