ArchangelWe caught up with Archangel Armor to see what updates they’ve made to their loadbearing body armor system. Archangel President Paul Carter says they’re up to version 3.51 and have modified the cut of the rear panel to allow a little more room when going prone and are reworking the quick release system, making it simpler and lighter.

The system was shown with an Eagle plate carrier mounted, but they also had a set with a standard IOTV mounted without modification. So, it seems units that want to transition to loadbearing body armor can do so with their current armor packages when the Archangel system hits the market. Still no word on availability, but momentum is continuing to build behind the scenes.

Archangel is going to participate in a study next week that will help determine how much weight is transferred where when the system is used. While everyone that has tried the system on agrees it feels much better, there hasn’t been a way to quantify the benefit. So, getting some numbers and science behind their product should help move things along.

ACH Full System - Vi#DBBC33
Revision’s Modular Protection Attachment System is a three part system that adds considerable protection to the face without compromising standard military accessory integration or adding huge amounts of weight.

The first element of the system is the halo. It attaches to a standard ACH and adds a milspec, low profile NVG mount, Ops-Core side rails and a rear mounted anchor point for the mandible shroud. The halo weighs about 75g, that’s 15 grams more than a current NVG mount.

The second part is the dual hinged eye shield that drops down and protects the eyes and upper face. The dual hinge keeps the visor from sticking straight out when not in use. It also locks in two positions, one that allows air to escape through the top and a second, tightly sealed position.

The third and final part of the system is one of three mandible guards. Revision offers a titanium wire mask for crowd control situations, and two ballistic versions with more and less cheek coverage that let the user choose between protection or weight. The ballistic mandible guard is rated the same or better than the ballistic rating for the ACH. No word on price, yet. Revision is looking to release the MPAS next year.

WilcoxUCGThe forward grip on your rifle has been home to all manner of velcro, rubberband and duct taped pressure switches. Wilcox applied some science to the problem and came up with a three-switch solution while adding the option for a trigger-deployable bipod. Their solution to the control clutter is the Universal Control Grip.

Two thumbs pads on either side of the top operate whatever is plugged into the aux switch connectors; in most cases it will be a white light on one channel and an ATPIAL on the other. Wilcox set both switches to use a single press for momentary on and a double-tap for constant on. This is identical to the operation of an ATPIAL, so there’s nothing new to remember when using your white light. The downside, though, is that you’re going to have to shell out for an adapter to get the UCG to work with most combat lights. The third control is a rotary switch that locks out the whole unit to prevent light ADs.

The grip is just a switch, so it needs no batteries. What to do with the extra room inside the grip? Add a bipod or a battery holder. If you don’t want the bipod, you can swap it for an accessory battery holder. The whole thing is made from aluminum with a nylon cover that makes it a little warmer to the touch and grippier in extreme weather. It mounts on a 1913 rail with a short throw lever that’s small enough to prevent it from snagging on anything. The unit MSRPs for $589 plus $235 for the flashlight adapter.
