GearScout spent few minutes away from the show floor at Outdoor Retailer to meet South Salt Lake Tactical Officer Steve Crandall. He doesn’t work for Petzl, but he’s obviously done enough tactical ropework with the EXO to be considered an authority on it. He gave us a runthrough of Petzl’s Tactical EXO EASHOOK system.
The Petzl Tactical EXO EASHOOK system was originally designed to help get first responders out of trouble, but the military realized it’s potential and quickly perverted its design to help them do the opposite. The 2.9 pound kit consists of 50 feet of 7.5mm Technora heat- and cut-resistant line with a captive EASHOOK ‘biner on the anchor end and the tactical EXO self-braking belay device on the other.
The kit can live unnoticed on the back of your armor package, unnoticed in its own pouch until needed. When needed, snap one end to an anchor point and the other to your assault harness, and it’s Batman time. Drop over the edge with one finger holding the lowering bar. Let go and you stop, letting you bring your attention to your weapon, teammate or target. The system is notable for its size, weight and simple operation, but proper training is required to operate it. Available now, $420
