Updated with new photos- We caught up with Princeton Tec at Modern Day Marine this afternoon and got the word on updates to the Remix Pro headlamp. They got the same feedback we offered in our review earlier this summer and have made some changes and improvements to the light. Our chief gripe is with the switch. The original switch was too easy to activate and more often than not the light was burning through it’s CR123 battery while stashed in a pocket. PT has redesigned the switch, adding a ridge around the switch’s edge and also increasing the pressure needed to activate it.  But, they didn’t stop there. They’ve embraced the principle of modularity and showed us a new mount that lets you easily move the light between head, helmet and chest. Check it out in the video.

UPDATE: Check out the updated gallery photos to see the changes side-by-side.

Remix Pro
Details:

  • 1 white LED with high/low settings for the main light.
  • Secondary 3 LED array with high/low settings for wider (task) lighting. This secondary light LED is either red, green or white depending on the model.
  • Runs on 1 CR123; 4 hours on high using main LED, 5 hours on high using secondary LEDs.
  • 66 grams with battery
  • Water resistant
  • MSRP $60

Pros:

  • White and red light- great admin use light.
  • Rotating head- the head rotates up and down on its mount. We found the click stops held the orientation securely.
  • White light is bright and tight- high power plus the telescopic beam shape gives awesome range for it’s size.
  • Red light this bright is unusual- most red lights are barely usable for navigation. This one lights a path 3-5ft out in front of you.
  • Compact package- lightweight, too.
  • Durable.

Cons:

  • Soft touch switch design is an accidental activation nightmare.
  • Short battery life. In practical use, the battery life appeared shorter since the light was often found on when stored in a pocket or pouch.
  • Low setting is too bright- Low setting on the main LED is way too bright for many close-in uses. Know that if you buy the red or green models, you’re only going to get effective task/reading light in red or green.
  • Polymer lens-  The plastic lens scratches easily and will affect beam quality and range before too long.

Bottom line- We can’t recommend this light for tactical use. 2 out of 3 times I grabbed the light from a MOLLE pouch its was already on. This is a security issue, as well as a power management issue. Princeton Tec needs to add a far stiffer switch, alter the UI so its not activated by a single button press or add a mechanical lockout.

That’s a drag because the light is quite useful otherwise.

SurefireSaint

GearScout received the Surfire Saint last night. We brought it to the studio to give our readers an exclusive first look in a huge SFW flashlight porno shoot.

The unboxing isn’t a meme I quite understand, but we’re not here to judge. So if you’re a flashlight guy, turn the lights down low, get a box of tissues and enjoy the 62 image photo gallery after the jump. We’ll be back with a review and beamshots before you know it.

HeadLampsHeadlamps used to be huge entanglements of wires and specialty batteries that appealed to cave dwellers and miners. Now, small, efficient LEDs make these handsfree lights useful admin tools for everything from reading in your rack to roadside vehicle repairs.

Weight, balance, runtime, battery availability and beam shape and color are all points to consider when choosing your headlamp. From bargain bin to top shelf, here’s sample of 8 contenders that you should have on the top of your list.

Hit the jump for reviews with lots of photos of each light with beamshots.

petzl-tikka-2-plus1Petzl has just released the Tikka 2 Plus over in Europe, making the rest of us here in CONUS standby ’till fall. For that, they earned the white-flag barb found at the end of this post. I caught a look at it on a Polish outdoor e-commerce site.

My Polski is pretty rusty, but thanks to Google Translate we know it runs on 3 AAA batts, has three settings with runtimes at 55/140/300 hours, has a discreet red LED for light-discipline use, carries an IPX4 water resistance rating (which means it’s splash/rain resistant with no gaskets), comes in gray or green, weighs in at about 83g and costs a spendy $45.

The French company has one of the most mature headlamp lineups in the industry. So, further refinement to the Tikka line should mean an improvement in performance and features. No “one goose step forward, two steps back retreat” expected here. The red LED alone is a worthy upgrade if that’s all it brings. Cheese, white flags and headlamps- go France!

Thanks – Dominik

UPDATE: There’s also a new Tikka 2 XP with a sliding wide angle lens and a little more power.

Energizer Trailblazer Micro

The grand daddy of flashlights everywhere gave us a peek at their newest headlamp. The tiny Trailfinder Micro is the smallest of Energizer’s headlamps. It’s about as thick as a fingertip up front and the battery compartment, around back, isn’t much bigger than the AA battery it contains.

It’s waterproof and sleek and has three functions. It’s got a button for max brightness, 60 lumens, hold the button down and it ramps up or down to any brightness setting between 100% to 6% of its max output. The other button activates a red light. It runs for 2 hours on max, a lot longer if you use it dimmed down. Specs and another pic after the jump.
