Here’s the latest issued Army 4x ACOG with “cross” reticle and secondary Docter close quarter optic on top, as issued. Soldiers are generally happy with the new “cross” reticle and see it as a worthy upgrade. The Docter CCO was not as popular, though. Blame it on the nature of the fight here in the mountains. One soldier told me that every engagment he’s had was close to the max effective range of his M4.

American Rifle may be a new company, but no doubt we will be seeing a lot more of them in the near future. Company president Theodore Karagias met with us last week and unveiled a new mounting system for optics. Coming from an engineering and aerospace background, Mr. Karagias takes the accepted design for optic mounts and throws them out the window. The wrapping style of his mount is more than simple aesthetics, it is less on optic longevity and truing up the mount. Take a look at the Web site for the technical information on these mounts, and know that we’ll be looking these hard getting ready for an upcoming review. I’ve already got one of my Aimpoints riding in this mount, and once the larger mounts are out, I’ll be dropping in my IOR Valda into the mix as well.

The past ten years have turned most Military and Police units away from iron sights, and into the world of optics.  There is no question that shooting scores and real world hit percentages have gone up with the use of red dot and magnified optics.  We’ve all used them, and while iron sights are still a solid fundamental to be familiar with, I’ll bet there are very few of us who are interested in going back to them.  Battery life, and reliability are the first topics brought up when we think of optics, but how often do we consider the optic mount itself?

Aimpoint CompM4sAimpoint wants everyone to know about the July 2009 US Army contract award for  565,783 M68 Close Combat Optics. The contract is for $171 million worth of Aimpoint CompM4s sights. End-to-end, that’s 21.5 miles of sights. So, if they could float, you could form a chain of CompM4s’ from France to England.

The 2 minute-of-angle, unmagnified, red-dot sight runs for up to 8 years on a AA battery and has 7 night vision compatible settings and 9 daylight settings. This award will push the number of Aimpoints in use by the US military to more than 1.25 million.

Carbine ammo is scarce and expensive. What if you could zero a weapon to within 2 inches of dead center at 25 meters without firing a round? Telluric Group is importing the Small Arms Collimator from the UK. Costing about 2 grand, the unit will pay for itself when used by a small unit.

You shove the rod down the muzzle of your rifle and sight in with your optic. The SAC displays a chart that allows you to make sub 4 mil adjustments. Go to Telluric’s website for more dope.

Machine gunners take note of the new Aimpoint/MATECH Crew Served Weapon Mount for the Aimpoint Micro T-1. The adjustable range mount was developed as a rail-mounted sight for belt fed weapons.

Using a knob on the side of the unit with a built-in scale, the gunner can adjust the sight for point-of-aim=point-of-impact in 100 meter increments from 100-800 meters for 5.56mm and 300-1100 meters for 7.62mm guns. The mount has dual opposing locking levers so if one breaks (machine guns don’t give gentle piggyback rides) the other is still keeping your optic in place. Check with MATECH for pricing.
