GorePyrad Jacket500

At their AUSA booth, Gore is showing a new superlight 2-layer jacket made from their newly named Pyrad material. When we saw the flame resistant material last year, Gore was calling it “Gore Military Fabric”. Gore built the new jacket in advance of the Army’s RFI for the 4th Gen ECWS program.

The material in the jacket is laminated to a 70d nylon face fabric that gives a textured hand. The crinkled look makes it easy to see at a glance if a soldier is wearing an FR garment. The jacket feels about as light, if not lighter than a jacket made from Gore-Tex Pro Shell.

Patagonia Combat Uniform Tag

Patagonia gave us a peek at a few protos of their new combat uniform at this year’s OR Summer. Patagonia has been in and out of the military market over the years and seems to have been reenergized after their collaboration with Natick Soldier Systems on the PCU Level 9 uniform. They were guarded about photographing the whole uniform since they are still in the proto stage. But, they did let us shoot the multicam tag above with the born-in-Vietnam tag, showing that this isn’t a Berry compliant PCU garment, but an entirely new clothing system.

Their new combat pants are based on the cut of the Stand-Up pant, a 30 year staple in the Patagonia catalog. Features for combat include a gee crotch for mobility, stretch panels in the lower back that are a bit more supportive than those found  PCU 9 and Blackhawk’s HPFU. The knees are patterned from one of their ski pants and have pockets to accommodate Crye’s knee pads. The pants are held up with reinforced belt loops and a Canadian style bar-tacked button fly.

We also saw a few other pieces including a super lightweight combat hoody based on the Hoodini jacket and a combat shirt made from domestic wool. Some of what they showed us may not graduate into production garments due to the cost of materials and/or the cost of assembly. But Patagonia has been one of the go-to design houses for behind-the-scenes military garments for a long time and should have some super kit to offer come release day.
