Soldiers used off-the shelf Nemo GoGo one man tents and Mountain Hardwear 45 degree UltraLamina bags to keep them warm as they manned exposed, mountaintop observation posts. They said the colors didn’t matter to them since the shelters were usually set up behind sandbags.

Instead of using their super-strong airbeams, Nemo has found something even stronger to support your shelter: an MRAP.

Nemo’s newest bivy, called the Magbag Shadow SE 1P, has a set of detachable rare earth magnets that attach to the undercarriage of suitably tall vehicles to create a 27-inch-high, 1-person tent. If you can’t find a vehicle to shelter beneath, the Magbag works just fine as a traditional, unsupported bivy. The new M-ATVs are low-rider low (for an MRAP, anyway) at 13.4 inches, and aren’t tall enough to work with the Magbag.

The Magbag is made from 40 denier “OSMO,” Nemo’s proprietary waterproof/breathable tent fabric, and has two doors, one large one on the side and another on the front. The doors can be made with mesh fabric for ventilation. It’s 2.5 pounds and comes with a stuff sack, stakes, magnets and a repair kit. Dimensions are 89 inches long x 27 inches tall x 31 inches at the head, tapering to 25 inches wide at the feet. It’s a mil-only item available through ADS for about $249. Just don’t try and use the Magbag under a moving MRAP until Nemo releases the matching, quick-attach Kevlar footprint.

Mountain Hardwear gave us a heads-up on a new tent they intend to bring to the military market. The Hunker 1 is a freestanding single wall tent. It’s a 1-person design with 2 doors, 3 poles and 4-season functionality.  It’s low peak height is intended to keep visibility down but still allow some ability to live comfortably inside for extended periods. One of it’s two doors has a vestibule awning to cover gear in bad weather that will also mate up with another Hunker 1 to provide a covered work area between the two tents. Right now it’s still pre-production, so pricing isn’t set yet.

  • Single wall, four season construction
  • Two doors: large dual canopy and mesh “front door”, smaller canopy “back door”
  • Awning over “front door” for dry gear storage
  • Awning designed to clip to second Hunker 1 tent for coverage and connection between two tents
  • Mesh vents at both ends and at large door allow for ventilation options
  • Three pole sleeve design for easy set up and minimum reflectivity
  • Dual grommet connections at each pole end point for tension options depending on weather conditions
