Chris Costa’s home on the internet, www.costaludus.com is the place to register for Costa classes, learn about the Costa gear Syndicate, and maybe buy a Costa t-shirt.

The Syndicate is of particular interest to GearScout readers. It’s a section devoted to the gear that he’s vetted through use in thousands of hours of training. Sure, it’s not real-world combat T&E, but Costa’s fired more rounds and done more draws in a month of classes than almost any 11b/0311 has done on a deployment. That regular use and abuse is going to tell a lot about a product’s design and durability. Right now it’s list of brands and some models that he’s used, but I hope Chris will have time to add more. I’d like to see some insight into the how the equipment is best employed and why he’s chosen to endorse it. Eagle-eyed readers will see some upcoming Arc’teryx gear hidden in there. Updated MultiCam Alpha Jacket or a Naga Hoody, anyone?

I’m also told there’s a secret section on man grooming and beard care, but I can’t find it.

Tip: Slam the buttstock into the ground while pulling the charging handle in an effort to free a casing from the chamber.*

*Good tip, but our hero learned the most important part the hard way; when using a collapsible stock, close the stock first. On the upside, pain is an awesome teacher. That’s one lesson he won’t forget.

Sure we could make fun of the guy. But, posting this just saved a few of you from a busted finger.

Haley Strategic Partners
just posted their training schedule through winter, 2012. Courses offered so far are on the bread & butter line and include Adaptive Carbine, Adaptive Handgun and Adaptive Kalash. Nothing has been posted about pricing.

I spoke with the guys this week and got the lowdown on the a couple of classes that aren’t on the sked, I’ve bee sworn to secrecy, but I can say that what they’ve posted so far barely scratches the surface. Travis is going to be putting together a few classes that will be so extraordinary, so epic, that they will one day have their own Wikipedia page.

I came across some Department of Defense/NSW Public Affairs B-roll of SEALs going through BUDS. The Navy shoots and offers it up as a way for the media to splice sequences of operators into their news stories. It’s both fun and terminally boring to watch the whole thing since there’s little to no context. There’s some cool stuff-  some rarely seen footage of operators swimming underwater with all their kit. There’s some SDV stuff, Hell Week and some third phase footage of guys getting dirty on San Clemente Island.

For all you video editors (and marketing teams), here’s a link to the footage on DVIDS. If you register, you can download the vids in higher resolution.

Ammo is pricey enough that I don’t really want to spend more money on a bunch of fancy targets for my pistol training sessions. So, I’ve put my ink-jet to work and have been scouring the internet for drill ideas and PDFs of targets. Last week I printed out a “dot torture” drill target to shoot. It’s a great drill I found on pistol-training.com. (If you haven’t read ToddG’s blog and new forums, you’re missing out on some good pistol talk and training tips.) Just tape a few DIY 8.5″ x 11″ targets up over the cardboard backing or on the back of a B27 and you’ve got a customized target set for your session and less time wasted on target resets.

One of the other popular training aids is the 3×5 card. It’s used for speed and accuracy training. When I was at Staples grabbing some printer paper and 3×5 cards, I saw they had multicolored 3×5 Post-It notes –500 for $10. I know I can’t be the first guy to have figured this out, but it was a slap-on-the-forehead moment. Put them up fast –sans-Scotch tape; and they come in different colors that are useful for calling out specific actions.

SIRT
Firearms instructors the world over will tell you that dry-fire training is the best thing next to true range time. Problem is, if you have a single action pistol you’re pulling the slide to reset the trigger after every shot. Enter the SIRT Training Pistol. The Shot Indicating Reseting Pistol has two lasers, red and green, that show exactly where the pistol is pointed after the trigger break.

The adjustable trigger is the heart of the system. With an allen wrench, you can set the trigger over-travel, trigger break, break force, sear engagement to simulate just about any trigger on the market. Right now, the frame is set up to simulate the feel of a Glock 17, though a Beretta M9 and a Smith & Wesson M&P body is in the works. The training pistol and one magazine (with adjustable weight) are available for $439. Military and law enforcement discounts are available if you contact the company at nextleveltraining.com.

Ultimate Training Munitions had prototypes of their new 5.56 training magazine on display today. The new mags feature a center channel that’s sized for the neck of their training rounds. UTM’s shorter, thinner tipped rounds will feed fine, but a live 5.56 round will be too big to fit past that center channel.  So, if you see a blue magazine in a weapon you’ll know that it’s loaded with one of UTM’s three training rounds; marking round, silent blank, or loud blank.

We weren’t familiar with UTM’s training system but got the rundown on their MMR (man marker rounds) and were impressed enough to get a full system demo. Check back for a GearScout video on their system when we get some range time under our earpro.

Here’s a video showing how to train. Hard. The unit doesn’t appear to flinch after a little drama is added to their training display.

It’s clearly a show, but are the Kazaks trying to kill or capture the occupants of that bus? More importantly, who measured the line charge being used by the assaulter and what Gulag did they send him to?

Magpul Dynamics had some footage from the newly released second volume of their Art of the Tactical Carbine training DVDs looping in their booth at the NDIA Small Arms Symposium. I didn’t pull up a chair and watch the whole thing, but I watched enough notice the tips and tactics in V2 are more advanced than those found in V1; which makes sense since the new video is based on their 2nd level course.

In a nutshell, there’s more carbine employment and less carbine operation. The production quality looked great, the instruction is engaging, there’s an hour segment on gear alone, an outtakes reel and Chris Costa upped the CDI factor by growing his volume 1 goatee into a full beard for the new production.

The 4 DVD set should be available in a couple of weeks for $50. Perhaps Magpul had to up the price $10 to pay Costa’s facial hair stylist. It’s good stuff and a great way to spend a rainy day with the Mrs.

Hit the jump for a preview and some of the blooper reel.
