Split Barrel
December 13th, 2009 | Photography | Posted by Colin Kelly

No, Wile E. Coyote was not involved in the making of this image, nor was Photoshop. A contestant in the first USASOC Sniper competition held last week at Fort Bragg had some sort of mechanical malfunction and shortly after he pulled the trigger to shoot, his barrel split right down the middle. No one knows for sure why the barrel split like it did but I was told that the Armorer is looking into it.

December 29th, 2009 at 10:48 amIve done some research since the last entry, it appears to be an Accuracy Intl Chassis System 2.0. I found some info that alludes to the Mk13 being a Rem 700 receiver, but nothing on the barrel. Anybody know if this is Rem or AI. I have toured the Rem plant in NY and their barrels (my discription not theirs) are solid pieces, drilled, then machined for calibre. I doubt they would split straight down the middle. Just glad the trooper was not injured by this, although I can’t imagine the look on his face……
