Marine Corps Times writer (and recently published author) Gina Cavallaro and I are spending a little time with Marines at Camp Lejeune…in the rain, mud, and some of what Camp Devil Dog has to offer. North Carolina is SOAKED, but that is not stopping these brand-new female Marines from their patrol.

AF Monster Truck

Ever been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic and wished there was a way to get around all those other slower drivers? The Air Force Recruiting Service has just the vehicle you’ve been dreaming of. An A-10 Monster Truck, complete with 30mm cannon and missiles would be a sure way to get around, over, or through any obstacle in your path. The recruiting truck recently made an appearance at the 2010 Wings Over Whiteman Air Show and Open House, at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. where most of the traffic was flying overhead. Ret.) Lt. Dick Uyehara, is a Korean War veteran that had big Air Force career goals when entered in 1951. But one day in 1955, he was forced to eject from a B-57 (similar to the aircraft he sits on) at 600 miles per hour over Washington D.C.—ending his plans and taking both his legs. He had to struggle free from a malfunctioning ejection seat, only to have the stabilizer (seen behind his ankles) hit him during the bailout, sever one leg and mangled the other. During the recovery he asked to have his remaining lower leg amputated due to complications.
Teri, his wife said, “He never let it beat him,” although he was in great pain. After release he never used a wheelchair, preferring to walk — unaided — on prosthetic legs, Teri said.
He started a dental laboratory in Hollywood, and became a dental technician for Hollywood celebrities. He and Teri retired in Grand Junction, Colo., set on trying motor home life, and seeing the States. (U.S. Air Force photo by Lance Cheung/Released)

Sailors muster on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, CVN 65, as she makes her way towards Norfolk after a six-week cruise on Thursday, September 9, 2010. This was the first – and longest – cruise for many of the ship’s company as the Big E has been in the yards for two years. The Enterprise will be the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be decommissioned.
