A door gunner in a Chinook in Afghanistan last June – and Sean and I are on our way back to Zabul, via Kabul first.

Ready

SOme of these guys were in their racks, a couple were in their whites, but just a few minutes after getting the call that they needed to be suited up and ready for a possible crash on the flight deck, they were there.

Some of these guys were in their racks, a couple were in their whites, but just a few minutes after getting the call that they needed to be suited up and ready for a possible crash on the flight deck, they were on the scene and ready to react. The helo landed safely, there was no crash, and two of them had to put their dress shoes back on.

Every little bit counts

Near KAF via Blackhawk – this is pretty dense by Afghanistan standards.

A Handful of Dust

Pfc. Matthew Hoyt, 20, from Chicago, Ill., waits to move an ammo resupply from a Chinook helicopter at PMT Viper in SW Zabul province. This is a few seconds into the takeoff – it was actually a total brownout in the beginning – and there are more than a few pebbles thrown in there. Larger bases have gravel for LZs – but for the smaller FOBs, well, as always, one makes do in more than one way.

DC Osprey

dc-ospreyThursday, May 28, 2009 – sometime around noon…I was on an assignment with Off Duty editor Jason Watkins in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Quite a few helicopters had already passed by, but the noise from this one was a lot different. What the heck was an Osprey doing flying over the Mall? And why didn’t anyone turn and look at it?

Last Saturday I was outside near the Marine Corps Memorial when I heard an airplane noise that was far different than the normal passenger jets in the area. A B-52 passed overhead, not in the normal Potomac River flight path…am I going loopy?

The Refueler

Pfc. Andrew Petrossian, 20, from Los Angeles, Ca., a refueler with 282nd Aviation Company at FOB Lagman, watches two medical evac Blackhawks take off at sunset. “It’s awesome,” he said. “This is my first month of twelve, and sometimes it’s even kinda beautiful and peaceful out here. Sure, it’s tiring to work in the sun all day, but you have a real sense of accomplishment – and it’s cool to be able to work in aviation.”
