Pre-Irene Tailgate Party

This could be the oddest place I’ve had to park recently. Before departing on flights to reposition aircraft in advance of Hurricane Irene, crew vehicles were parked inside a hangar, around and underneath a non-operational HC-130 at Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.  Had to leave the keys in the ignition but I don’t think the Hercules is going anywhere soon.

Handle With Care

Sometimes door handles are an afterthought on any house or building.  So today when we came across KA-BAR knife shaped door handles at United States Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) headquarters at Camp Lejeune, N.C., I was kinda impressed.  The handles go nicely with the mirrored security tinting on the doors.  I wonder if I could keep door-to-door salesmen at bay if I got a set of these for my house.

No, this isn’t a Rorschach impersonator event.  These guys are Royal Navy sailors on HMS Ark Royal.  We were on board to film an episode of a TV show that we produce and in scouting locations we came across these guys.  Turns out they were doing a damage control exercise where they were hooded and given commands over radio to simulate working in thick smoke.

This is the first underway for the Independence as it just left the shipyard in Mobile, Ala. several days earlier.

No, Wile E. Coyote was not involved in the making of this image, nor was Photoshop.  A contestant in the first USASOC Sniper competition held last week at Fort Bragg had some sort of mechanical malfunction and shortly after he pulled the trigger to shoot, his barrel split right down the middle.  No one knows for sure why the barrel split like it did but I was told that the Armorer is looking into it.
