A World War II era P-51 Mustang, “Glamorous Girl,” flies over Manassas, Va.  This flight – along with rides in other military craft – was part of the Wounded Warrior Aviation team’s efforts to train & educate injured vets for new careers in the civilian world. The Hmong community in the U.S. is mourning the death of a revered leader, Vang Pao, today.  Pao, who was 81, died Thursday night in Fresno, Calif., following a battle with pneumonia.

The general led Hmong guerrillas in their CIA-sponsored effort against communists during the Vietnam War, and after the war, helped his fellow Hmong refugees resettle here. Paul Rieckhoff, an Army Iraq veteran, throws out the first pitch at a Washington Nationals game during a military appreciation night in Washington, DC,  August 11, 2010. Rieckhoff is the executive director and founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), a nonpartisan group that aims to improve the lives veterans and  “amplify the soldiers’ voice in the American public dialogue.”

The Nationals have several season-long programs for the military, such as the “Me and Friend” USO partnership deal, where military children will receive complimentary tickets +1 to a game.

The SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) held a memorial service in honor of Veterans Day at the grave site of Tech Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, "one of the first to challenge the military’s exclusion of GLBT people from the armed forces," at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, November 8, 2009.

Mortimer M. Caplin holds a glass of champagne after being named a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor at a ceremony at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. The is Legion of Honor France’s highest civilian award – and was created by Napoleon in 1802 to acknowledge services rendered to France by persons of great merit. Mr. Caplin’s was recognized for his “personal participation in the liberation of France during World War II.” During the Normandy invasion, Mortimer served as a U.S. Navy beachmaster and was a member of the initial landing force on Omaha Beach.
