Buzz for “The Pacific”

Before I get into this afternoon’s movies and panels, I wanted to note how much talk there’s been today about “The Pacific,” the 10-part HBO miniseries that follows the 1st Marine Division through the battles of World War II’s Pacific theater. Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks are behind the project, which will serve as a companion piece to “Band of Brothers.”
The series will focus on three main characters: Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie and Corps legend John Basilone. To give you a sense of how excited the film industry types are around the GIFF, consider Jim Proser, director of “I’m Staying with My Boys,” which was screened this afternoon. The movie is a biographical documentary of Basilone, who is Proser’s uncle. And Proser was about 200 times more animated when talking about “The Pacific” than about his own film.
People who love military films can’t wait for this, so you might want to start saving up now to pay for that HBO subscription. Look for it in 2009.
