Registration opens Jan. 25 for five races associated with the Marine Corps Marathon, and running in one of them will earn you “guaranteed access” to the main event Oct. 28. Choose from the Irish Sprint 10k in March, the Historic Half and Semper Fred 5k in May, June’s 3.5-mile Run Amuck and August’s Gender Defender 5k. For those waiting to register for the Corps’ 26.2-miler later this year, it’s worth noting that an entry to The Irish Sprint 10k gets you an entry to the Marine Corps Marathon. Hero Rush national obstacle course race series: Hero Rush is a new national race series debuting late April near Washington, D.C. The 5k to 7k courses include obstacles a firefighter would encounter on a call: “ … You’ll slide, climb, crawl, get wet, search for victims, drag and carry equipment, carry stretchers, race up stairs, fight your way through smoke and flames … and more!” says the event’s website. Registration fees cap at $84, but sign up early for a discounted price. Plus use the promo code MTimes to get 10 percent off the registration cost for any 2012 Hero Rush race. This is in addition to the $5 off that all active-duty and retired military members already receive.
