Much as experienced shipwrights apply their time-honed skills to build the steel beasts that ply the world’s oceans flying the flag of the U.S. Navy, so too are we now ready to slide this hull of links down the ways:
- Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, wrapping up a two-day trip to the shipyards of the Northeast, liked what he saw at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine; and also liked Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, outside Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
- China’s naval enthusiasts are getting pumped about designs for the People’s Liberation Army-Navy’s new aircraft carriers.
- Russia’s newest frigate has come back from sea trials, after 19 years under construction.
- Rep. Gene Taylor, D. Miss., chairman of the House Armed Services seapower subcommittee — who is pretty plugged in with Navy shipbuilding — can’t be bothered with Twitter or Facebook. He’s on YouTube, though.
- Three Coast Guardsmen have joined the Navy frigate Crommelin off Hawaii, patrolling for illegal fishing vessels.
