Two brand new surface ships got underway recently, and the photos appeared today on the Navy’s Web site. The amphibious transport dock New York — which will be, if it isn’t already, the most famous ship in the Navy because its hull contains steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center — sailed June 27 from its shipyard in Avondale, La.

And the Navy’s second littoral combat ship, Independence, put to sea for the first time Thursday from its shipyard in Mobile, Ala., after some initial hiccups with its engineering plant.

We’ll be watching to see well both new ships get along.
