What might have been… what still could be

Galrahn has yet another fascinating find today, based on what his post describes as a simple Google search: The Navy’s abandoned official blog, complete with a .mil domain and everything, which now hosts a single “test” post.

“Navy Live,” the banner calls it. “The Official Blog of the United States Navy.”

The site hasn’t been updated since its only post went live Dec. 12, but it’s yet another case study in how challenging social media can be for some — let’s face it — slower-moving organizations. (Including Navy Times.) Any time it rises above the level of a single person posting with a free account, blogging quickly gets complicated. Everyone involved has their own views about what a blog should be, what its tone should be like, where and how it should link. Judging by “Navy Live,” the service still hasn’t reached a consensus.

If the Navy picks it back up again, what would you look for out of “Navy Live?” How would you recommend the Navy use a blog to get its message out, interact with other bloggers, and generally increase its presence on the Web? Or should it?
