BRUNSWICK, MAINE – - Navy Secretary Ray Mabus landed here in a rainstorm Friday in his Gulfstream jet, ate a lobster roll at a restaurant built on an island in the middle of the Androscoggin River, and sent his very first Twitter update.
With some help from his staff members, Mabus wrote that he was pleased to be in Maine for tomorrow’s christening of the destroyer Jason Dunham, which is scheduled to accept its ceremonial champagne bath from the mother of its namesake, a Marine who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor after he smothered a grenade with his body in Iraq, saving the lives of at least two of his squad mates.
Tweeted Mabus: “#SECNAV I’m taking 1st trip out of US as SECNAV & looking fwd to seeing our dedicated Sailors & Marines.1st stop Maine & #JasonDunham.”
Decoded from the Twitspeak, Mabus said he is taking his first trip out of the United States as Navy secretary — a swing that will carry him to ships and shore posts in the Central Command area of operations — but that before his trip begins, he will participate in tomorrow’s christening of the Dunham. The ship is under construction just up the road at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine.
Mabus won’t have his own dedicated Twitter account (as does @navytimes, for example) said his spokeswoman, Capt. Beci Brenton, but he will have a “#secnav” mark you can search for here.
I haven’t heard anybody say “Baahhhth,” yet, or “ship-yahhhd,” or “whhhel, he’s from awaayyy,” or the other phrases those of us who aren’t from down east expect to hear in this paahht of Maine. But during a stop for gellato in downtown Brunswick earlier, we did see a man with a rastafari hat and a tie-dyed shirt hobble past using a stick, only to see him moments later riding a bicycle with no trouble, carrying the stick under his arms. Some things you just don’t get when yo-ahh frahhm away, Maaatha.
