The carrier that apparently couldn’t save the world

Navy Times’ eagle-eyed news editor Jenn Rafael laughed out loud this weekend when she was catching a summer flick at the octoplex and saw the trailer for “2012.” Apparently, in that benighted year, the nations of the world have to band together to save the world’s population from massive global flooding, and part of the U.S. contribution is to re-activate the decommissioned carrier John F. Kennedy. You can see the results of this decision at the 1:56 mark in this version of the official trailer.
Even though the deck of this ship clearly says “USS John F. Kennedy CV 67,” the carrier’s island looks a lot like that of a Nimitz-class, wouldn’t you say? Scoop Deck remains committed to being your online source for the nerdish pointing out of movie ship inaccuracies. Remember the “bilge bay” aboard “Crimson Tide’s” ballistic missile sub Alabama? Or the Spruance-class destroyers that inexplicably blew up when the Japanese attacked in “Pearl Harbor?” What’s your favorite movie ship mistake?

August 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pmNot Nimitz class, no rear antenae tower behind the island. The only Nimitz class with no antenae tower behind the island is the Carl Vinson and she just came out of overhaul a couple of months ago. Could be computer regenerating of the Kennedy or an older carrier.
