When you look at an aircraft carrier — the icon of American naval might, delivering persistent, credible striking power anywhere in the world without a permission slip — the first thing you probably think is, “How could that be food?”
The carrier Ronald Reagan, specifically, has long been the muse for food artists… must be a California thing… and although you’ve read here on the Deck about the ship being the subject of an enormous cheese sculpture, now here’s an even more accurate edible representation: Carrier cake. Capt. Thom Burke, left, and Capt. Kenneth Norton changed command of the ship on Thursday, and to celebrate, they had an incredibly lifelike, appropriately large version of their ship to eat.
Judging by this photo, that cake has a real plastic island, even including what looks like a lighted “76″ and naval aviation’s classic “Beware of Jet Blast… ” warning. Plus it’s dressed out as befits the occasion, and appears to have a row of lights around the hull. One can only hope that, in place of an air wing, the hangar bay of this Reagan is carrying a deadly load of chocolate frosting.
