Lejeune maps out new Wounded Warrior barracks

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Marines recovering at Camp Lejeune, N.C., from wounds sustained in Afghanistan and Iraq are getting new digs conveniently located next to the base naval hospital.

Officials are scheduled to break ground Friday on Lejeune’s new Wounded Warrior Bachelor Enlisted Quarters. The barracks will be adjacent to the hospital, providing wounded Marines easy access to medical appointments.

Currently, wounded Marines live in an older, but modified, barracks near the II Marine Expeditionary Headquarters building, which is about five miles from the hospital.

The $25 million project will include the following features:

• 100 two-man rooms with a living area and kitchenette in each room.

• First floor facilities with wheelchair accessibility.

• Wounded Warrior Battalion company spaces.

• Private counselor rooms.

• Fitness and physical therapy rooms.

• A battalion aid station.

• A large meeting room.

The barracks will be one of four future facilities that will become the Wounded Warrior Complex, according to a news release. The complex will include a rehabilitation center, battalion headquarters and a Fisher House, a home where families of wounded Marines may live during their Marines’ recovery.
