The Islamic State's top spokesman was wounded in an airstrike in Anbar province, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said in a statement Thursday.
"There are confirmed reports that the so-called terrorist Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the spokesman of the Daesh terrorists, was wounded in an air strike," the statement said, according to Reuters and other media. Daesh is another term for Islamic State. Details of the injury were not released.
The U.S. State Department designated Al-Adnani as a global terrorist in August 2014, and a reward of up to $5 million is offered for information leading to his capture. The State Department describes him as "the official spokesman for and a senior leader of the Islamic State." The department says al-Adnani, a Syrian, issued the militant's declaration of the creation of an Islamic caliphate and was one of the first foreign fighters to oppose coalition forces in Iraq.
"Al-Adnani has repeatedly called for attacks against Westerners and has vowed 'defeat' for the United States," the department says.
