JACKSON, Miss. — The adjutant general of Mississippi is discouraging private citizens with personal firearms from standing guard at Mississippi National Guard recruiting stations.
Maj. Gen. Augustus Collins issued a statement Friday saying new security measures include armed soldiers and airmen at the 10 storefront stations in Mississippi. Collins says armed civilians showing up to guard the offices cause confusion and increase the risk of injury. He said those choosing to appear with weapons at the offices will be reported to local authorities.
Earlier this week, the guard said recruiters will return to the storefront centers next week.
Recruiters were temporarily moved after Gov. Phil Bryant issued an executive order saying the National Guard could increase security at its facilities. That was in response to fatal shootings at military centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
