Report: Officers, crew disciplined in fatal Fort Bragg blast

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The Army is disciplining a battery commander and half a dozen leaders after an artillery accident at Fort Bragg last year that killed one soldier and injured seven soldiers.

The Fayetteville Observer reports an Army investigative report describes the accident that killed 22-year-old Pfc. James Groth of Ethal, Washington, and seriously injured two sergeants.

The accident happened just after midnight on Feb. 21 last year when crew members attempted to ram a second round into their howitzer before the previous round cleared the tube, causing an explosion.

The investigator recommended issuing letters of concern to the battery commander and operations officer and to remove and retrain a platoon leader, platoon sergeant, two section chiefs and an ammunition team chief.
