GULFPORT, Miss. — The Port of Gulfport is now one of only 17 in the nation designated as a "strategic port" by the Department of Defense.

The Sun Herald reported the designation opens the door for a new class of cargo and shipments.

Executive Director Jonathan Daniels said Gulfport can now be used as a shipping point for military cargo and personnel not only from military installations in south Mississippi but also for those within a 400-mile radius.

Daniels said the port will be able to handle mobilizations and demobilizations of military personnel and equipment used in overseas operations.

He said military coast installations had previously been using ports in other states because Port of Gulfport lacked the designation.
