1846: The Battle of Resaca de la Palma ocurred in which the U.S. Army of Occupation, led by future President Zachary Taylor, forced the Mexican Écercito del Norte back south of the Rio Grande.

1386: The Treaty of Windsor was signed between England and Portugal—the world's oldest alliance, still in effect.

1862: in the Battle of Farmington, Mississippi, Confederate Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn managed to drive off Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of the Mississippi. In Florida, however, Confederate forces were driven out of Fort Pickens (now Pensacola).

1915: The Allies took on the Germans in the Battle of Artois, which ended bloodily but inconclusively on June 18.

1943: The German Fifth Panzer Army surrendered in Tunisia.

1944: Soviet forces secured Sebastopol.

1945: While the Soviets celebrated Victory Day in Red Square, Czechoslovakia was liberated, the British liberated the Channel Islands, Yugoslav Partisans liberated Ljubljana, Norwegian Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling was arrested and Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring was captured by the U.S. Army.
