Disabled veterans would get free parking for up to 10 days at airports in Louisiana under a bill making its way through the Louisiana legislature, according to The Advocate.

Under the proposal, veterans who have a military honor license plate or a disabled veteran ID card from the Department of Veterans Affairs would be eligible for free parking. Their free parking would be good for up to 10 days at the state's seven passenger airports, and after that they would pay regular parking rates, according to the news report.

House Bill 318 passed Louisiana's House Transportation Committee last month and now awaits action in the full House, The Advocate reported.

"It is a bill that really says to the veterans of this state: 'We say thank you for your services,'" said state Rep. Johnny Berthelot, R-Gonzales, sponsor of the legislation.

None of the airports has opposed the bill, Joey Strickland, director of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, told the transportation committee, according to the report.

"I think you have a great bill," state Rep. Barbara Norton said in the report. "We need to start showing those veterans how we really, really appreciate them."
