TOTAL DIVERSITY

Madeira, Portugal

While stationed in Landstuhl, Germany, I seized the opportunity to travel Europe and wanted to find a location that few Americans know about — Madeira! Claimed by the Portuguese, Madeira is located in the Atlantic just north of the Canary Islands. The island has an incredible variation of microclimates, plants and animal species. Temperatures range in the upper 60s F to the upper 70s year round.

Being an island, fish is on the menu at just about every restaurant, the most popular fish being scabbardfish and octopus. However, if you do not enjoy fish, then burgers, pizza, steaks and just about any ethnic meal can be found throughout the island. Madiera is also known for its unique wines ranging from dry to sweet.

If it's adventure you desire, the island has some of the most incredible hiking trails, surfing, scenic drives along cliffs, canyoning, mountain biking, scuba diving, coastal swims exploring caves, catamaran cruises to nearby islands, and big-game fishing. Light adventure offers museums, botanical gardens, cultural centers and cable cars that take you from the capital Funchal up the mountains to tourist areas.

If you think just about any island offers these types of activities, you are in for a big surprise, as Madeira's climate, biodiversity and topography are unmatched. I've compared it to a recent excursion to Maui and would take the adventure opportunities of Madeira over the Hawaiian Islands.

The best part is the price. Through the Armed Forces Vacation Network, I booked two rooms in early December for seven days and six nights for under $400! The rental car cost me 85 Euro, and I caught my flight from Frankfurt, Germany. The whole trip with food (cheap local places as well as a couple expensive fine cuisine establishments) and souvenirs cost me under $1,400. Try getting that island deal with the options that Madeira has to offer anywhere else!

BEAUTIFUL CITY ON THE ADRIATIC SEA

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Whether you sail into a port or drive along the coast, you must visit this city sitting on the Adriatic coast. Dubrovnik is one of Europe's least-talked-about but best places to visit. Take a walk on the cobblestone streets and sit and enjoy the best pizza you could have. All while taking in the amazing views.

MARVELOUS MALTA

Malta

Are you looking for a relaxing, sun-filled vacation? Well, look no further — Malta has it all.

Malta consists of three unique islands just south of Sicily in the Mediterranean. In Malta, you can sink your toes in the sandy beaches or bask in the sun atop the rocky ones. You can gaze at the crystal-clear water as you indulge in Maltese street food.

Malta is also rich in culture and history dating back to 5200 BC. Bring plenty of Euros to partake in nightlife, entertainment and excursions.

You must add Marvelous Malta to your bucket list of travel explorations — you won't be disappointed!
