A South African company is gearing up for a big "Shot Show" weapons expo in Johannesburg next year, but don't be fooled by the name.
Organized by SA Events Corp., the "South Africa Shot Show 2017" promises to be "the dynamic expo for professionals in the tactical and firearms" industries, with more than 500 exhibitors and more than 50,000 attendees expected, according to a press release.
Don't confuse the event, however, with anything organized by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and its popular SHOT Show.
"We just heard about these folks, who should not be using the SHOT Show name. They are not affiliated with NSSF or our SHOT Show," said foundation spokesman Bill Brassard, who declined further comment.
This year's 38th annual SHOT Show — shorthand for Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show — drew more than 64,000 attendees in Las Vegas to see the latest in hunting and tactical gear.
While making no apologies for co-opting the name, organizers for the South Africa-based Shot Show say their expo is different because it will only showcase tactical weapons and gear.
"Our focus is not into hunting and outdoor but strict to Tactical and Firearms industry, [close] protection and armed securities," wrote Erwin Jager, director of the Johannesburg event, in an emailed response to questions.
