The United States Marine Band brought the "Late Show" studio audience and host David Letterman to their feet Friday as "The President's Own" gave a musical tribute to the comedian, who is retiring soon from the late night talk show.
The marching band performed after an appearance by first lady Michelle Obama, who used the time to discuss Joining Forces, her initiative with Dr. Jill Biden to support service members, veterans and their families, according to Rolling Stone.
Dave showed a more serious side of himself than usual during this part of the show, firing off a number of questions for Obama regarding resources for veterans, the G.I. Bill, the eradication of homelessness, and the importance of giving college counseling support to high school kids.
There was also some discussion of their plans after their current gigs — "We should hang out together," said the FLOTUS, which prompted Letterman to ask if she was kidding. "I'm not, we could do things. I would help you — raise your children ... I could help you through those dark times."
Then Obama gave her reason for her appearance: "I'm here because you're leaving. You've been a tremendous support to me, to my family, but mostly to our men and women in uniform and our veterans ... so we decided to pay tribute to you. We have here with us today The President's Own United States Marine Band, in honor of you Dave."
Letterman's final show is set for May 20. Comedian Stephen Colbert will take his place.
