In the January 31 print edition of Army Times, in the Parting Shot column, we featured the above photo by PFC Chase Steely, an infantryman in 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. PFC Steely, from Nashville, TN, is a self-taught photographer who has been documenting his deployment to Afghanistan.
I look through hundreds of pictures about different aspects of military life every day by wire service photographers as well as official military photographers. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps all have accomplished photographers and combat cameramen producing a lot of good work from around the world. It was a treat, though, to stumble across photos that record the daily experiences of an infantryman who happens also to be a talented photographer. Steely's photos indicate what is important to him and often illustrate a certain sense of humor and perspective on his life in the Army. Click here to see more of PFC Steely's work. I'm sure he's not the only soldier, sailor, airman or Marine out there with a camera so leave a link to anybody you know who is doing similar work in the comments.
